How to Start a Motivational Speaking Career
James Malinchak
Printer-Friendly Format

In every venture there are always the first steps. And those steps are very crucial because they can either make or break your aspirations; they may either give you more confidence or discourage you from going on.

There will always be hard workers but the successful ones are always the smart workers. And in starting a motivational speaking career, it is no different. As an aspiring motivational speaker, you must be smart enough to know the value of your work.

The most common misconception about speaking careers is that it is very difficult to get paid satisfactorily. If that's the case, it is either you don't have the adequate speaking skills or you are just not playing it smart.

If you have been speaking for a while now and you think you're really good with your stuff, don't hesitate to give a substantial price tag on your services. One of the biggest blunders in this business is selling oneself short.

Always keep in mind that you are in this business to fill your pocket not your ego. Don't just get contented with praises and applause.

Sure it is nice to hear remarks like, "Wow, thank you very much! I really appreciate your wisdom. You really are amazing!" and "You have opened my eyes to new possibilities. You are now officially my idol!"

Then you get home, opened your fridge, realizing it's empty and how come you enrich everyone's life but not your bank account.

The secret is knowing when to call it quits in terms of giving free speaking services. Let the world know that your wisdom and talents have a price. It is a commodity so special that people must pay to obtain.

It is when you start to give worth to your stuff that your career in motivational speaking will take off to new heights. Of course this is saying that you also have the material and skills to match. If you con people into believing that you have what they want when you actually don't, your career will only be a short-lived fraud.

Eventually, when you are starting to get your due, your career will only keep on growing. Your niche will have an impression that you really have the quality substance they may be able to use. Your image and esteem will boost along with your earning capacity.

So, maybe it is time to stop saying yes to pro-bono arrangements. If they really want you, let them compensate you. It is very pathetic to witness a motivational speaker -- that speaks of the ways to achieve success -- gradually dying of starvation.

Hard work will bring bread to the table but smart work will bring a feast!
