How do I become a motivational speaker? I know why you are asking this question. Probably, you have heard that a career in motivational speaking is very profitable. Maybe you know someone who got rich with motivational speaking. Or maybe, you have been into a speaking event and you got inspired by the speaker delivering a moving speech. You want to be that person; a confident, self-assured, wealthy person. Fortunately, anybody can be a motivational speaker. All it needs is the genuine desire and the awareness of how the industry works. With decent speaking skills and the knowledge on how to choose your market and how to promote yourself, you can be a successful motivational speaker in an instant. Like I said, desire and knowledge is the prerequisite. Desire is the passion to speak in public, help a lot of people, and improve your self professionally and financially. On the other hand, knowledge is understanding the methods and the approach to get there. Not having both, will make your journey towards motivational speaking success futile. Having all the desire but without the knowledge will not make you go places. You will likely speak for free - forever. Eventually, your desire will die out because you have gained nothing from it. On the other hand, having thorough knowledge but lacking in desire will also not work. You cannot implement the knowledge effectively because you don't have passion in the process. Now, considering you have the desire, let me give you the basic knowledge. - Speaking is not only about speaking A successful speaker must have products that either give another stream of income or build more credibility. Usually, motivational speaker have books. The contents of the book are basically what they are teaching about in their speech. These often sell and give your market an impression that you are really good at what you do. Some products can be audio cd's, videos, and transcripts of speeches. - Speaking is Marketing You won't get paid bookings or you won't get paid handsomely if you don't know how to promote your self. Sure, your skills are great but you are not getting paid, are you? Get out there and network with the right people. Get referrals. Spread the word. Make marketing materials to improve your chances. It is only through marketing that you'll get rich speaking. - To be a successful motivational speaker, you must choose a market and know everything about that niche. Choose a market audience where you have an affinity for. Determine if what you have to share is really what they need and want to hear. Research your market. What are their problems? What do kind of products do they buy? What kind of information do they need? Your materials must be addressed to your market accordingly. - Know your competition Knowing your competition gives you a better perspective about your niche. Learn how your competition get his bookings. Determine their strategies in marketing and what type of products they sell. How do they perform their speeches? How are they reaching out with the market? With the knowledge from your research you can devise your own strategy better because you have been learning from others; from the very people who have been there and done that. You may even outdo your peers because you may recognize something they haven't recognized yet. It is not unethical; it's just a smart approach to get where you want easily.
