How to Become a Public Speaker
James Malinchak
Have you ever wondered what to do with your charm and knack of speaking in front of people? Have you ever thought that you could make a profitable career out of it? Professional public speaking is a vocation for people with a flair in mass communication. A career in public speaking does not just involve skills on stage but includes a lot of off stage skills as well. Before I go into that, lets touch on how to become an effective public speaker; one that may have longevity and great money-making potential. A public speaker should have a specialty. You should know what kind of speeches you are most natural and attuned with. There may be a specific topic that you find your self most knowledgeable in. Once you are able to determine your topic consider it your specialty. In public speaking, your specialty will determine your niche. Your niche is your ticket to public speaking success. Being a generalist will limit your potential. It may seem counter-intuitive but in any business venture, a target audience must be resolved. It is your market. It is where you will draw your inspiration and riches from. And now, that brings me to the other half of being an effective public speaker. Public speaking is not only about doing speeches; it is also implementing marketing strategies. Delivering speeches is the product and the marketing aspect will sell the product. Poor marketing practices will not get you booked. Your product is pointless if no one is using it. Great public speakers know how to brand themselves. Are you a hilarious motivational speaker? Brand yourself as a 'Motivational Comedian!' are you a near death survivor with something inspirational to share? Label your public speaking persona as 'The Miraculous Preacher!' Those are just simple examples and I know they're a bit cheesy but you get my point. Branding enhances marketing appeal and denotes niche expertise. Moreover, you are much easier to recall because of the branding. Marketing yourself as a speaker must be extensive. You should use lots of marketing materials to help reach your audience. Flyers, brochures, and media ads are just some of marketing tools you can implement. Keep in mind to stay focus with your brand. Emphasize your personal brand in these marketing materials. So that, at first glance, it can be catchy and somehow capable of displaying what you are all about. Public speaking is an ongoing journey. A lot of learning will take place as you grow with your career. Ultimately, you will become an authority and people will give high regards to your skills and knowledge. It may take some time to get to that status but you won't ever get there if you don't spend the time promoting yourself in the public market. Make the people aware of your skills and offers and just be sure that you can deliver a great performance.
